We had some chickens in our backyard
We had some chickens, no eggs would they lay
Until a rooster got into our yard
And caught them chickens right off their guard
They're layin' eggs now!
Just like they used-ter
Ever since that rooster
Got into our yard...
On Monday I was putting out my mom's Easter decorations and came across these little birds. My paternal grandma made them a long time ago. I fondly remembered playing with them as a child. I loved the chickens! I took pictures thinking I could maybe recreate them at home, but to my delight my mom let me take this little reddish-pink thing with me. I've made 6 so far, but might not get a chance to photograph them. Tomorrow morning they will go to school (filled with tootsie rolls because I have a zillion of those left over from Birdie's birthday) for the girls' teachers and classroom helpers. After school they will be out on spring break for the next week.
(even if I don't manage to get pictures of the 6 I have right now, I will be making more for other little gifts and can snap a pic of some at some point.)
a little edit for Kim... I guess I forgot to mention that the chicken fits over a plastic Easter egg. I put the tootsie rolls in the eggs. Apparently Grandma (or Maim) also made hens that pooped jelly beans. I'm not sure how that worked, and frankly I'm a little afraid, but my cousin said she's mailing me one.

Very cute! But, I have never heard the "chicken song!"
It is fun to have memories attached to such a small item.
(The song is new to me, too.)
It's new to me as well. The chicken is adorable and it doesn't look too difficult to make either. I remember a doll my grandma made for me, but I don't know if I still have it. Between all the moving, it may have been lost. Those things are more sweet than all the toys someone could have bought for us as children, though.
I have sung the chicken song within the last week - along with many of the other car-trip greats! ("Had a horse, his name was Napoleon..."; I've Been Workin' on the Railroad; Bingo; "There was a little house in the middle of the woods..." and oh, so many more! The girls have to sing "Me pappy" without me, 'cause I can never get the tune quite right.)
I'm such a slacker in teaching them the songs, Anch. You are my hero. I LOVE the horse named napoleon!! That's my all time favorite.
The only chicken song I know is
Oh I had a little chickie who would not lay an egg
so I poured hot water up and down her leg
and the little chickie hollered and the little chickie begged
then the little chickie sat and laid a hard boiled egg
You said you were filling these with tootsie rolls? How do you get the tootsie rolls out? Are they like baskets rather than like little stuffed creatures?
The chicken song is new to me. The crocheted hen is adorable.
Love the hard boiled egg song! Wish I knew the tune. We'll have to make up our own and adopt it.
I forgot about the jelly bean-pooping chickens. Can't wait to see all your recreations!
I love those! Can you imagine a jelly bean pooping chicken though? ROFLOL!
